Canada is in a bit of a pickle. With a population hitting 40 million, new industries coming online and voracious energy demands, it needs a reliable energy grid with zero emissions in less than 30 years. Globally, nuclear power and hydropower provide three-quarters of global low-carbon generation. But this country hasn’t built a new nuclear facility in 30 years and hydropower projects have been beset with cost overruns and delays. With prep work starting in Ontario to make Canada’s first grid-scale small modular reactor a reality, what is needed to goose governments into acting quickly? How can the private sector, particularly private capital, help bridge the gap to bring projects from the drawing board to reality?
